Cost Modelling: There’s more than one way of life

Stating that "the cost of this product is 100 Euro" is ambiguous and by itself does not bear any information. Indeed, when speaking about costs, it is indispensable to mention in the first place the processes used to derive the costs. And typically, every process will result in another cost. A first distinction has to be made between top-down and bottom-up models. In both approaches another distinction can be made concerning the type of costs to consider at the input: historical costs (leading to a HCA or Historical Cost Accounting model) or current costs (leading to a Current Cost Accounting model) or forward looking costs (leading to a Long Run cost model). Finally, there are also different ways of allocating costs towards services: Stand-Alone Costs (SAC), Fully Allocated Costs (FAC), Incremental Cost (LRIC).
