Several aspects are driving telecom operators around the world to bring optical fiber closer to the customer by rolling out FTTx networks:
(FTTC = Fiber To The Cabinet; FTTB = Fiber To The Building; FTTH = Fiber To The House).

  • First of all, there is the ever increasing need for bandwidth demanded by the services (e.g. bringing multiple HDTV streams to one home).
  • Furthermore, bandwidth/speed also plays an important role in marketing (every operator wants to be the best, and that means either the fastest or the cheapest).
  • Finally, traditional operators also count on serious operational savings by migrating from a copper based access network to a new fiber based network.
Given the scale of a typical access network, it is clear that huge investments are needed to bring optical fiber into each home. In a first estimation, one can say at least in every street where buildings are present, trenches will have to be made, requiring an enormously labour intensive and costly process of civil works.
Luckily, the benefit of such a deployment is that it can happen in consecutive phases, gradually connecting more homes to the fiber network. In this context, it is crucial that:
  • The optimal timing for a phased roll-out is selected in order to maximize the return on early investments.
  • The final roll-out topology is well optimized in order to minimize the deployment cost.
These two important optimizations can be realized by using Comsof’s FTTX network design solution, which is based on our software support platform FiberPlanIT. This platform provides functionality to:
  • Represent local access networks up to a very detailed level: separate streets, customer locations etc. can be modelled. It is possible to automatically detect the street topology and customer distribution based on GIS data.
  • Model operational processes, allowing for an integrated CapEx/OpEx analysis.
  • Optimize topologies : tree, ring, hybrid ring/tree,... All or only part of the customers can be included in this topology.
  • Visualize the calculated topology.
Other applications of Comsof’s solution include the possibility to simulate various scenarios in order to compare different architectural or technological choices.
